We first heard the story of the tocororo through a Cuban local guide we met. Its beautiful colours mimicking the Cuban flag, this wonderful creature is Cuba`s national bird. Reflecting the cuban spirit and openness, legend says it cannot live in captivity, dying of sadness if caged. Supposedly, this represents the determination of the Cuban people. Our guide disagreed. He said he didn’t believe the bird is in any way like the people, because “todavía estamos vivos”. We are still alive.
